Laval will gradually offer menstrual products in certain public places

Laval, Thursday, June 4, 2026 – The city council unanimously adopted, on June 3, the proposal by Louise Lortie, councilor for Marc-Aurèle-Fortin (Laval Party), aiming for the gradual implementation of free menstrual products in community centers. Supported by Aline Dib (Laval Movement) and Isabelle Piché (Laval Action), the proposal provides for a gradual deployment in collaboration with the Laval Women's Forum (TCLCF). "Menstrual products are essential, no one chooses to menstruate. I sincerely thank my colleagues from all political parties, as well as the TCLCF for their collaboration throughout this process. We were able to rise above partisanship to work together to concretely improve the lives of women in Laval. This is an important step in making these products more accessible in Laval," stated Louise Lortie.

A cross-party initiative that has unanimous support

The proposal adopted Wednesday evening asks the municipal administration to implement a free distribution project for menstrual products in community centers, in collaboration with the TCLCF. It follows a call launched last March by the organization, inviting elected officials to draw inspiration from its pilot project at the Saint-Joseph Community Center to expand access to these products in municipal buildings. This call was heard by Ms. Lortie, who initially presented this initiative to the council in March. Since then, the various political parties have collaborated to reach the resolution adopted Wednesday evening.

For its part, the TCLCF is convinced that access to free menstrual products in public places in Laval is more essential than ever. Its General Coordinator, Marie-Eve Surprenant, was among the representatives present at the municipal council to support the proposal. "It's a project that has proven its worth, is low-cost, with a significant positive impact, by removing the burden of financial responsibility and mental load from women and menstruating individuals. Menstrual products are essential products. As such, they should be accessible for free, particularly in municipal facilities," emphasized Ms. Surprenant.

"Now that this proposal is adopted, I look forward to seeing this project take shape and for the work to begin to ensure a successful deployment and to continue our efforts to make these products more accessible throughout Laval," concluded Ms. Lortie.
